Recreation Scholarships

Scholarships for recreation programs are funded through the North of the River Recreation Foundation's Youth Scholarship Fund and may cover up to 50% of program fees, depending on eligibility and available funding.

Eligibility 

Youth under the age of 18 may qualify if their household currently participates in or receives benefits from one or more of the following programs:

  • Assistance from the Department of Human Services
  • Food Stamps / Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Medi-Cal or Kern Family Health Care Services
  • Women Infant Children (WIC)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Foster Care (Guardianship Court Documentation)
  • Subsidized Housing HUD Section 8 Rent Subsidy
  • Kern Housing Authority Assistance
  • Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)
  • Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) / Community Connections

Documentation is required to verify eligibility and must be submitted with the Application.

Requirements 

By accepting a scholarship, the participant and parent/guardian agree to the following: 

  • Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Scholarships are limited and not guaranteed.
  • Applications are only accepted during the program's registration window. 
  • A new application is required for each program or session.
  • Participants must attend and actively participate in the registered progrram.
  • Repeated absences may result in loss of future scholarship eligibility.
  • Participants must comply with the NOR Code of Conduct and all ordinances, as well as applicable laws.
  • Scholarships may cover up to 50% of program fees only.
  • Any remaining balance is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and must be paid at registration.
  • Scholarships have no cash value and are non-refundable
  • If a participant withdraws from a program, the scholarship portion will not be refunded, credited, or transferred.
  • Any eligible refunds will be processed in accordance with standard NOR refund procedures for that program, and will apply only to the portion paid by the parent/guardian.
  • NOR reserves the right to verify eligibility at any time.
  • Providing false or misleading information may result in revocation of scholarship and denial of future assistance.
Application Process 
  • Submission of a Scholarship Request Application and eligibility documentation
  • NOR staff will review your completed application, verify eligibility, and assess scholarship availability
  • Applicants will be notified of their approval status
  • Upon approval, participants must register and pay the remaining balance to secure their spot
