For Tots (age 3-5)
Tot T-Ball

Children will learn how to play baseball in a FUN, non-threatening environment.  This program teaches children a variety of skills including: catching, throwing, batting, and running/agility.  Parent participation is required.  A field instructor will be assigned to each team to assist parents in implementation of drills.  Please register early!  These classes fill up very quickly!

Tot Basketball
This program teaches children a variety of basketball skills including: dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding and running/agility. Teamwork is emphasized in this program. Children will learn how to play basketball in a FUN, non-threatening environment. Parent participation is required. A court instructor will be assigned to each team to assist parents in implementation of drills.

Tot Soccer

Tot Flag Football
This program teaches children a variety of football skills including: throwing, catching, pulling flags, running/agility, and kicking/punting. Teamwork is emphasized in this program. Children will learn how to play football in a FUN, non-threatening environment.

Inside Sports and Games
Come play some cool indoor sports and games with your little tikes.  Includes a variety of active sports and games along with alternative games such as “jenga” and “duck duck goose”!  Have fun interacting with the kids and having a laugh or two.

Kids Love Soccer
For children ages 2 to 12 years old. Your child will learn speed dribbling, multi-directional dribbling, passing, shooting, defending, and much more. The emphasis is on sportsmanship, effort, learning, and fun in a non-competitive environment.

Youth Summer Baseball and T-Ball
The NOR Youth Summer Ball Program is based on principles that fulfill three goals designed to develop high ideals of health, citizenship and character that will last a lifetime:  1) Instill a sense of sportsmanship, fair play, and team spirit.  2) Acquaint players with the fundamental rules of baseball; and, 3) Promote safety awareness in athletics.

After School Sports Programs
NOR offers after school sports programs in over 26 schools throughout the district.  Sports vary based on season. The program is intended to be a non-competitive recreational activity. Coaches teach the basic fundamentals of the game, teamwork and sportsmanship, allowing the kids to have fun while learning the game. Participation is the major emphasis.

Youth TackleBall
No Try-outs! No one gets cut! Everybody plays!  Tired of sitting on the bench? Think you have the potential if you only had a chance? Looking for a football league for kids? North of the River Youth Tackleball is a great opportunity for every participant to learn the fundamentals of the game and get maximum playing time.  This is an instructional league that enforces minimum play standards. We want every participant to finish the season with a desire to continue playing football for years to come.

For Adults (age 18+)
Adult Team Sports
You don’t quit playing because you get old... you get old because you quit playing! NOR offers adult leagues in several sports, including: Men’s 5 on 5 Basketball, Coed Volleyball, Men’s Baseball, Slow Pitch Softball, and Indoor Soccer . Leagues run during several seasons throughout the year.  Get some friends together and sign up a team today!

For Active Adults (age 55+)
Silver Streakers Baseball
The "Silver Streakers" play slow pitch softball twice a week, year round. Men must be 55 years or older and women must be 50 years or older. Players of all abilities are encouraged to join us. There is a $5 registration fee. Call 392-2030 for more information.

Karate/Self Defense: The Order of the Dragon
Master Earl Absher, 7th degree black belt, teaches a combination of Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and self-defense for ages 3 to adult. Practical “real life” self protection program for all students. Goals are to teach self defense, stranger dangers, and safety awareness, with an emphasis on respect and discipline. Year round program, sign up any time! Sign-ups taken at the class.

True Tai-Chi
Develop speed & great power! The art of Tai Chi is misunderstood by many people but now you can learn the complete original true art of Tai Chi including the 4 major ancient weapons for optimum health and for real life self-defense skills.  The true art of Tai Chi is a great health art and Tai Chi can be practiced by anyone, like the young, old, healthy, and ill.  The true art of Tai Chi is also a great and powerful martial art which uses a secret method called a fa-jing which is only taught to inner-door students.  Also many questions will be answered, such as, “Why is Tai Chi practiced so slow?”

Rock Climbing at Riverview Community Center
A hands-on adventure in rock climbing. You learn tying knots, climbing commands and signals.  Each week you climb in Riverview's own specialized climbing gym, featuring 16 foot high walls with overhangs, cracks, pockets, edges, pinches, underclings, and slopers. We offer both intro and advanced classes as well as an adaptive class for the disabled.

Tennis Time at Westdale Park
Get great tennis instruction at a fraction of the cost of private schools and clubs!  Learn tennis in a fun, non-competitive environment that stresses skill development through progressive learning, good manners, and tennis etiquette.   Racket and balls are furnished.  Sessions are 6 weeks with make-up classes available.

Disc Golf at NOR
Try this exciting sport similar to golf, played with “Frisbee” discs on our 18-hole disc golf course at Riverview Park.

Open Gym at Riverview Community Center
Ages 18 and up can play pick-up basketball Monday, Wednesday or Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Riverview Gymnasium, 401 Willow Drive.  Only $3 per person!

NOR Junior Theater
North of the River Junior Theatre, in its 42nd season, provides the only continuous outlet for Kern County youth interested in theatre. We run several productions each year and have parts for kids of all ages.  .

NOR Senior Health and Fitness Day at the Rasmussen Center
Join us for our Senior health information day which include/covers: Health Information, Presentation Booths, Exercise Demonstrations, Giveaways, Health Screenings, Nutrition Counseling, Blood Pressure Tests, Cholesterol Screenings, and much more.  Admission is free!

Cooking with Cora

Your kids will learn their way around a kitchen during this  two hour cooking event for kids ages 6 to 12.  Students will create a yummy dish to take home and share with the whole family.   Limited to the first 12 students to pre-register for each 1-day class.  Please register early!  These classes fill up very quickly!

Red Cross Babysitter Training

This class will prepare you to (1) respond to emergencies and illnesses with first aid, rescue breathing, and infant/child CPR, (2) make decisions under pressure, (3) communicate with parents to know household rules, (4) recognize safety and hygiene issues, (5) manage young children, (6) feed, diaper, and care for infants.

Guitar Lessons
Learn how to play the guitar in a relaxed group setting. Lessons for children 8 years through adults in 4 week sessions. Instruction by David Gamble. Register in advance at the  Greenacres Community Center.  Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes are offered.

Computer Classes at the Rasmussen Center
Introduction to Computers:  This class is for people new to computers.  Learn how to start and turn off a computer and the basics of operating a computer.  Learn to open and close programs, move the mouse, write letters, create forms, use a printer and experience the Internet.  This fun and exciting class is taught by Bob Campbell and he will teach you how to get the most out of your computer!  6 week course meeting once a week. Only $30 per 6 week session

Microsoft Windows Basics (Intermediate):  This is a great class for those looking to enter (or re-enter) the workforce and seeking to improve their computer skills, or for those who currently have computer skills but would like to expand them.  Instructor Betsy Roig will cover a new topic each week including: Microsoft overview, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  4 week course meeting once a week.  Only $20 per 4 week session

Internet/Email:  This class, taught by Betsy Roig, will introduce you to the joys of the World Wide Web (www) and Email.  Learn how to find information using search engines, how to reply to, forward and originate email messages, what you need to get started and how to connect to the WWW are all among the many skills you will learn.  Betsy will focus on topics that are specific to what you, the students, would like to learn.  4 week course meeting once a week.  Only $20 per 4 week session

Kids Dance Classes at Fruitvale-Norris Rec. Center.
Toddler Dance (ages 2 to 5):
  Ballet and tap styles are used to build your child’s coordination, memory skills, sequencing, and confidence. Give your child an early start in learning how to interact with others in a group setting in these fun and unique classes. Classes start
monthly.  FEE: $25/$20 resident fee

Children's Dance 1 (ages 5.5 to 8): An intro to Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip-Hop that will help develop coordination and memory skills and build self confidence in children ages 5.5 to 8. Classes start monthly.  FEE: $25/$20 resident fee

Children's Dance 2 (ages 4.5 to 9): An intro to Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip-Hop that will help develop coordination and memory skills and build self confidence in children ages 4.5 to 9.  Students must audition for this class. Classes start monthly.  FEE: $40/$30 resident fee

Pre Teen DANCE (ages 8 to 12): Pre Teens will learn Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Ballet. They will also choreograph their  own moves and learn advanced moves in this class. Classes start monthly.  FEE: $25/$20 resident fee

Teen Jazz DANCE (ages 13 to 17): Teens will learn Jazz, choreograph their own moves, and learn advanced moves.

Ballroom Dancing with Barbara Bates
Learn to Dance like a star with instructor Barbara Bates with our classes in ballroom dance:
Beginning I:  Primary figures of six basic dances: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Swing, and Cha Cha.

Beginning II:  Concentrates on one dance per session, building on the material presented in Beginning I.  In addition to the dances listed previously, learn Samba, Polka, Hustle, Nite Club Two Step, and more.

Dance Classes at the Rasmussen Center
Country LINE Dancing:
Learn everything from the tush-push and Tulsa-time to the Chocolate City Hustle and Silver State Special.
Tuesdays Beginners Class: 5:00-6:00pm / Tuesday Class 6:00 to 7:00pm.  Fee: $5 per person, per class

Couples Dancing: Learn couples dances, but you don’t need a partner to attend! Beginner two step & waltz classes - some swing & chacha. Wednesdays from 9:00 to 10:00am.   Fee: $2 per person or $3 per couple, per class

Line Dance Variety: This is a high beginners to intermediate level class. The instructor follows the latest dance trends and teaches a little bit of everything with a variation of music. Thursdays from 1:30 to 2:30pm.  Fee: $4 per person, per class.

Jammin’ Island Girl Hawaiian Dance
Learn basic hand, body, and foot motions related to graceful Hawaiian dancing. You gain an understanding of body alignment, technique, dance moves, and culture. It’s relaxing, fun, and definitely exercise!
